The only way we’ve lasted 225 years is by making sure we’re up to date in the modern age – an ethos we’ve had from the very beginning. Founded by James Ormiston in 1793, Ormiston Wire was a trend-setting company in an age of change. In the same era, Mary Wollstonecraft was publishing A Vindication of the Rights of Women, King George the Third was ruling Britain and the production of wiring was still in its infancy. One of James’s many innovations at his newly acquired premises was to set up several wire drawing devices. The device was described in the Wire Drawing Handbook like this: ‘A mill consisting of an iron plate is perforated with steel eyelets or holes of differing sizes. The ingot, or starting diameter wire as we know it today, is passed through the largest size hole and then one degree smaller and so is continued until it is drawn to the required size.’ While this was a necessarily primitive way of manufacturing wire, it was also incredibly effective and showed how the start of the British Industrial Revolution was significantly affecting the way everything was being produced around that time. James had jumped aboard a fast-moving point in industry, one that put Ormiston Wire in rude health within a very short period. It was a successful beginning, and the tradition of innovation by the Ormistons has carried on to the modern day. In the modern day Fast forward 200 years, through two centuries of successful business practices and profits, and meet Mark Ormiston, the current Managing Director of Ormiston Wire. In the past century, we’ve had a hand in the production of the television series Thunderbirds, made the cars at McLaren safer, helped explorers traverse the Antarctic and even had our wiring implemented as part of a tourist attraction at Kew Gardens. What keeps bringing these people to our doors? In part, it’s because of our excellent products, our rich heritage and our insistence on environmentally friendly practices. Our green credentials We’ve been one step ahead of the eco-curve for many years. It’s a commitment that’s even brought Jonathan Bartley of the Green Party to our warehouse, and one we’ve further committed to when we gained an internationally recognised environmental qualification. ‘Our big question was this – how can we save money but maintain the quality of our products? We switched off lights in offices that weren’t being used, installed energy efficient lightbulbs, recycled our packaging and avoided landfill tax by purchasing a skip which is only emptied once every two years. Our sustainability efforts were increased in 2003, when we became the first UK-based SME to generate our own power with solar panels and a wind turbine. Although it is a relatively small company of just 16 employees, size has not prevented the company adopting sustainable business practices, says managing director Mark Ormiston. 'We decided to make the changes because we are a manufacturing company and we wanted to look at ways to save money. It wasn't because we had been a green company for years and years.'\n\nEnergy Saving MeasuresForced into action during the recession in 1991, Ormiston looked at ways to cut costs. The move from it Ealing base - a large inefficient old factory building - to a more modern premises in Isleworth, Middlesex, allowed the company to control overheads such as energy costs. The first step was to implement energy efficiency measures such as installing light bulbs with motion sensors that turn the lights off when no one is around. 'It's common sense', says Ormiston. 'If you are at home you don't leave your lights on at night, so why should you at work?' Plastic skylights were installed to reduce the need for artificial light. The company avoids the Climate Change Levy because it sources its power from a company that provides renewable energy - this saves the business around £1,100/year. Water is heated by a high-efficiency condensing gas boiler that provides hot water for radiators and hand washing, while push-taps in the bathrooms prevent water and energy from being wasted. As a result Ormiston Wire has managed to cut its water bill to £150/year. During the winter, heating can be expensive, but simple measures such as shutting the heating system down at 4pm rather than 5pm reduces gas use while still keeping the staff warm. Having few doors at the site ensures minimal heat loss.\n\nReducing WastePackaging costs were another area identified by Ormiston as a potential area of saving. 'I am a great believer in recycling - creating a loop where you can make a product and use it again', he says. 'It shouldn't go into a hole in the ground and be left to rot - it should be reclaimed, broken down, recycled and used again.' The amount of waste generated by the company used to fill two 16 cubic year skips a month. This has been reduced to one skip every six weeks with the use of a waste compactor. The company also charges customers a deposit on the reels that carry its wire products, refunding the deposit on return. This prevents the reels being thrown away. Cardboard boxes in which raw materials arrive at the factory are reused to pack finished products. Total savings on packaging are around £6,000/year, while waste removal costs have dropped by some £900/year. Total energy savings (excluding the Climate Change Levy saving) are about £3,000/year.\n\nKeeping the staff happyAs well as making commercial sense, the measures Ormiston has introduced have had the effect of creating a workforce committed to the company's values. Of course a 38-hour working week and a finish time of 1pm on a Friday have helped, but Ormiston has also been careful to ensure the rationale behind each of the company's environmental initiatives is explained. 'We are nothing special', he says. 'Our staff don't wear beads and sandals - they are just employed here and they know the measures make sense.' As a result, staff turnover is low - one employee likes it so much he is still working aged 95. The company's commercial and environmental success can be achieved by anyone, Ormiston insists. Basis of Sale 2.1 These Terms shall apply to all orders for the Seller’s Goods and services to the entire exclusion of all or any terms and conditions of the Buyer. 2.2 All orders, any variations to orders and cancellations of orders shall be subject to acceptance in Writing by the Seller. 2.3 The Seller’s employees or agents are not authorised to make any representations concerning the Goods or any services to be performed unless confirmed by the Seller in Writing. In entering into the Contract the Buyer acknowledges that it does not rely on and waives any claim for breach of any such representations which are not so confirmed. 2.4 Any advice or recommendation given by the Seller or its employees or agents to the Buyer or its employees or agents as to the storage, application or use of the Goods which is not confirmed in Writing by the Seller is followed or is acted upon entirely at the Buyer’s own risk and accordingly, the Seller shall not be liable for any such advice or recommendation which is not so confirmed. 2.5 Any typographical, clerical or other error or omission in any sales literature, quotation, price list, acceptance or offer, invoice or other document or information issued by the Seller shall be subject to correction without any liability on the part of the Seller. 3. Orders and Specifications 3.1 The Buyer shall be responsible for the accuracy of the terms of any order and for giving the Seller any necessary information relating to the Goods (including any applicable specification) submitted by the Buyer within a sufficient time to fulfil the Buyer’s requirements. 3.2 Each order or acceptance of a quotation for Goods by the Buyer from the Company shall be deemed to be an offer by the Buyer to buy Goods subject to these conditions. 3.3 No order placed by the Buyer shall be deemed to be accepted by the Company until a written acknowledgement of order is issued by the Company or (if earlier) the Company delivers the Goods to the Buyer. 3.4 The Buyer shall ensure that the terms of its order and any applicable specification are complete and accurate. 3.5 Any quotation is given on the basis that no Contract shall come into existence until the company despatches an acknowledgement of order to the Buyer. Any quotation is valid for a period of 30 days only from its date (unless otherwise stated), provided that the Company has not previously withdrawn it. 3.6 The Seller reserves the right to make any changes in the specifications of the Goods which are required to conform with any applicable EU, safety, statutory or industry requirements. The Seller shall also have the right to make production changes to any Goods contracted to be sold to the Buyer provided that the Seller shall have first obtained the approval of the Buyer (such approval not to be unreasonably withheld). 3.7 If any Goods are to be manufactured or any process is to be applied in accordance with a specification supplied by the Buyer, the Buyer shall indemnify the Seller against all loss, costs, expenses, claims and damages awarded against or incurred by the Seller as a result of any claim for infringement of intellectual property rights of any other person or any defect in the specification. 3.8 The Seller reserves the right to deliver up to 10 per cent more or 10 per cent less than the quantity ordered and the Buyer shall accept and pay for the same, and the quantity so delivered shall be deemed to be the quantity ordered. 3.9 Unless otherwise agreed in writing, all tooling shall at all times remain the property of the Seller (whether or not the cost of producing the same is reflected in the price charged to the Buyer). 3.10 The Company may deliver the Goods by separate instalments. Each separate instalment shall be invoiced and paid for in accordance with the provision of the Contract. 3.11 When Goods are to be delivered in instalments, each delivery shall constitute a separate contract and the failure by the Seller to deliver any one or more instalment shall not entitle the Buyer to treat the Contract as a whole as repudiated. 4. Price 4.1 The price of Goods agreed to be sold by the Seller shall be the price agreed in Writing or if no such price has been agreed, the price listed in the Seller’s published price list current at the date of acceptance of the order, and unless otherwise so stated shall be exclusive of any applicable value added tax and any duties, imposts or other levies and exclusive of all charges for carriage, insurance and delivery of the Goods to the address specified by the Buyer. 4.2 The Seller reserves the right, by giving written notice to the Buyer at any time before delivery, to increase the price of the Goods to reflect any increase in the cost to the Seller which is due to any factor beyond the control of the Seller (such as, without limitation, any foreign exchange fluctuation, currency regulation, alteration of duties, significant increase in the costs of labour, materials or other costs of manufacture), any change in delivery dates, quantities or specifications for the Goods which is requested by the Buyer, or any delay caused by any instructions of the Buyer or failure of the Buyer to give the Seller adequate information or instructions. 4.3 The Seller shall have the right to invoice the Buyer and the Buyer agrees to pay the same for all or any costs, charges, expenses and damage the Seller may suffer as a result of the Buyer failing to supply any materials or other matters agreed to be supplied by the Buyer for the purposes of the Seller carrying out the order or for supplying any such materials or matters which are defective or otherwise not suitable (as the Seller shall in its absolute discretion decide) for carrying out the order of the Buyer. 5. Terms of Payment 5.1 The Buyer shall be invoiced for the Goods on or at any time after the Buyer’s order has been accepted by the Seller. 5.2 Unless otherwise stated in the order or otherwise agreed, the Buyer shall pay the price of order without any deductions or setoff whatever (whether legal or equitable) by the date specified on the invoice or if no date is specified then within 30 days of the last day of the month in which the invoice is received and notwithstanding that delivery has not taken place or that property in the Goods has not passed to the Buyer. Payment shall be in pounds sterling. The time of payment of the price shall be of the essence of the Contract. 5.3 If the Buyer fails to make any payment on the due date then without prejudice to any other right or remedy available to the Seller, the Seller shall be entitled to cancel the Contract or suspend any further deliveries and/or charge the Buyer interest (both before and after any judgement) on the amount unpaid at the rate of 8% above the base rate from time to time of HSBC Bank plc, or if that base rate ceases to exist such other comparable rate of interest as the Seller may from time to time specify in Writing. 6. Delivery 6.1 The Goods shall either be collected from the Seller’s Premises or delivered by the Seller to the address specified by the Buyer. 6.2 Any dates quoted for delivery are approximate only and the Seller shall not be liable for any delay in delivery howsoever caused. Time for delivery or performance (as the case may be) shall not be of the essence of the Contract. The Goods may be delivered in advance of the quoted delivery date on giving reasonable notice to the Buyer. 6.3 Subject to the other provisions of these conditions the Company shall not be liable for any direct, indirect or consequential loss (all three of which terms include, without limitation, pure economic loss, loss of profits, loss of business, depletion of goodwill and similar loss), costs, damages, charges or expenses caused directly or indirectly by any delay in the delivery of the Goods (even if caused by the Company’s negligence), nor shall any delay entitle the Buyer to terminate or rescind the Contract unless such delay exceeds 180 days. 6.4 If the Buyer fails to take delivery or fails to give the Seller adequate delivery instructions at the time stated for delivery (otherwise than by reason of any cause beyond the Buyer’s reasonable control) then without prejudice to any other rights or remedy available to the Seller, the Seller may store the Goods until actual delivery and charge the Buyer for the reasonable costs (including insurance) of storage or sell the Goods at the best price readily obtainable and (after deducting all reasonable storage and selling expenses) account to the Buyer for the excess over the price or charge the Buyer for any shortfall below the price quoted. 7. Non-Delivery 7.1 The quantity of any consignment of Goods as recorded by the Company upon despatch from the Company’s place of business shall be conclusive evidence of the quantity received by the Buyer on delivery unless the Buyer can provide conclusive evidence proving the contrary. 7.2 Save in respect of a total loss or non-delivery of Goods, the Company shall not be liable for any non-delivery of Goods (even if caused by the Company’s negligence) unless the Buyer gives details of any loss or damage on the copy of the consignment note or delivery documents signed by the Buyer and advised to the Company within 48 hours of delivery and confirmed in writing to the Company with full particulars within 3 days of delivery. 7.3 In respect of total loss or non-delivery of Goods, the Company shall not be liable for any non-delivery of Goods unless the Buyer gives details of such loss or non-delivery to the Company in writing (otherwise than on a consignment note or delivery document) with full particulars within 7 days of the date of the Company’s invoice in respect of the Goods. 7.4 Any liability of the Company for non-delivery of the goods shall be limited to replacing the Goods within a reasonable time or issuing a credit note at the pro-rata Contract rate against any invoice raised for such Goods. 8. Risk and Property 8.1 Risk shall pass to the Buyer upon the Goods leaving the Seller’s premises or the premises of any supplier, distributor or agent of the Seller. 8.2 Notwithstanding delivery and the passing of risk in the Goods, or any other provision of these Terms, legal title in the Goods shall not pass to the Buyer until the Seller has received in cash or cleared funds payment in full of the price of the Goods and all other goods agreed to be sold by the Seller to the Buyer for which payment is then due. 8.3 Until such time as title in the Goods passes to the Buyer, the Buyer shall hold the Goods as the Seller’s fiduciary agent and bailee and shall keep the Goods separate from those of the Buyer and third parties and properly stored protected and insured and identified as the Seller’s property but the Buyer may resell or use the Goods in the ordinary course of business. 8.4 Until such time as title in the Goods passes to the Buyer (and provided the Goods are still in existence and have not been resold), the Seller may at any time require the Buyer to deliver up the Goods to the Seller and, if the Buyer fails to do so forthwith, enter on any premises of the Buyer or any third party where the Goods are stored and repossess the Goods. 8.5 The Buyer shall not be entitled to pledge or in any way charge by way of security for any indebtedness any of the Goods which remain the property of the Seller, but if the Buyer does so all monies owing by the Buyer to the Seller shall (without limiting any other right or remedy of the Seller) forthwith become due and payable. 9. Warranties and Liability 9.1 Subject to Clause 7, the Seller warrants to the Buyer that for the period of six months from the date of delivery any Goods supplied by the Seller will be free from defects in materials and workmanship. The Seller shall have the right to repair or remedy any such defects or to provide replacement Goods as the Seller shall in its absolute discretion decide. 9.2 Subject as expressly provided in these conditions, and except where the Goods are sold to a person dealing as a consumer (within the meaning of the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977), all warranties, conditions or other terms implied by statute or common law are excluded to the fullest extent permitted by law. 9.3 Except in respect of death or personal injury caused by the Seller’s negligence and save as provided herein, the Seller shall not be liable to the Buyer by reason of any representation, or any implied warranty condition or other term, or any duty at common law or under the express terms of the Contract for loss of profit, or for any indirect, special or consequential loss or damage (whether for loss of profits or otherwise) costs, expenses or other claims for compensation whatsoever (and whether caused by the negligence of the Seller, its employees or agents or otherwise) which arise out of or in connection with the supply of the Goods (including any delay in supplying or any failure to supply the Goods in accordance with the Contract or at all) or their use or resale by the Buyer or the performance of any services and the entire liability of the Seller under or in connection with the Contract shall not exceed the price of the Goods, except as expressly provided in these Terms. 9.4 The Seller shall not be liable to the Buyer or be deemed to be in breach of contract by reason of any delay in performing or any failure to perform any of its obligations in relation to the Goods if the delay or failure was beyond its reasonable control and for the avoidance of doubt factors outside of the Seller’s reasonable control include but are not limited to strikes, lock-outs or other industrial actions or trade disputes (whether involving employees of the Seller or a third party). 9.5 Where the Goods are sold under a consumer transaction (as defined by the Consumer Transactions (Restrictions on Statements) Order 1976) the statutory rights of the Buyer are not affected by these conditions. 10. Termination 10.1 The Seller shall be entitled not to fulfil orders previously accepted by it if the Buyer commits or allows to occur any material breach of any of the terms of these conditions which is not remedied within 14 days of receipt of a written notice from the Seller requiring such breach to be remedied. 10.2 Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Seller shall also be entitled to cancel the Contract or suspend any further deliveries under the Contract without any liability to the Buyer, and if the Goods have been delivered but not paid for, the price shall become immediately due and payable notwithstanding any previous agreement or arrangement to the contrary if: 10.2.1 the Buyer makes a composition or voluntary arrangement with its creditors or (being an individual or firm) becomes bankrupt or (being a company) enters administration or goes into liquidation (otherwise than for the purposes of amalgamation or reconstruction), or a moratorium comes into force in respect of the Buyer (within the meaning of the Insolvency Act 1986); or 10.2.2 where appropriate, the Buyer ceases, or threatens to cease, to carry on business; or 10.2.3 anything analogous to any of the foregoing occurs in any jurisdiction in which the Buyer has a place of business; or 10.2.4 the Seller reasonably apprehends that any of the events mentioned above is about to occur in relation to the Buyer and notifies the Buyer accordingly. 10.3 The exercise of the Seller’s rights shall not prejudice or affect any accrued action or right of remedy of either party. 11. Intellectual Property Rights 11.1 Notwithstanding any other provision herein all intellectual property rights in all and any materials, drawings, designs, exhibits, software designs, products, goods, services, prototypes, samples, presentations, exhibitions and any other matter whatsoever provided or shown to the Buyer whether before the acceptance of the Buyer’s order or in contemplation of it or during the course of carrying out any services hereunder shall be and shall remain the property of the Seller and subject as herein provided the Buyer may use the same only for the purposes specified by the Seller and shall not use or disclose the same to any third parties without the prior written consent of the Seller and shall not copy, reproduce or otherwise imitate the same in any form whatsoever. 12. General 12.1 The order is personal to the Buyer, no waiver by the Seller or any breach of the Contract by the Buyer shall be considered as a waiver of any subsequent breach of the same or any other provision. 12.2 The Company may assign the Contract or any part of it to any person, firm or company. 12.3 The Buyer shall not be entitled to assign the Contract or any part of it without the prior written consent of the Company. 12.4 The parties to the Contract do not intend that any term of the Contract shall be enforceable by virtue of the Contracts (rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 by any person that is not a party to it. 12.5 Any notice required or permitted to be given by either party to the other hereunder shall be in writing and shall be served by pre-paid first class post, personally or by facsimile to that other party at its registered office or principal place of business or such other address as may at the relevant time have been notified pursuant to this provision to the party giving the notice. 12.6 The construction, validity and performance of the Contract shall be governed by the laws of England and the parties hereto submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts. 12.7 Nothing herein shall be construed as an assignment to the Buyer of any intellectual property rights in the Goods being sold and purchased. 12.8 If any provision of the Contract is held by a court or other competent authority to be invalid or unenforceable in whole or in part the validity of the other provisions of the Contract and the remainder of the provision in question shall not be affected. We were approached by a training company to see if we could manufacture a replica of a trip wire, as used during the Cold War. The end purpose was to teach operatives how to disarm potential antipersonnel devices.\n\nThe Ormiston solutionAfter investigating historical designs and devices we were able to manufacture an accurate replica. This involved working with a specialist wood turning company to produce the bobbins on which the wire would be wound. The wire itself was stock spring wire, which was specially painted. Our specialist winding machines were then used to wind the wire onto the wooden bobbins.\n\nThe outcomeOn receiving approval to the initial prototype replicas, the order was placed and successfully completed, hopefully saving lives in the process.\n\n - [Palladium Braid](https://www.ormiston-wire.co.uk/case-studies/palladium-braid/): The applicationAt Ormiston, we are often approached to provide solutions to unusual or particularly exacting wire and braid applications, sometimes working with exotic metals. For this particular application we were asked to produce a quantity of Palladium wire braid. Palladium is a soft silver-white metal that resembles platinum. It is the least dense of the platinum group metals and has the lowest melting point. It is soft and ductile when annealed and greatly increases its strength and hardness when it is cold-worked.\n\nThe Ormiston solutionAs specialist wire and braid manufacturers we are readily able to meet almost any application and material specification. Once a prototype sample had been tested and the cost estimate approved, we successfully completed the order.\n\n - [The Redgrave-Pinsent Rowing Lake](https://www.ormiston-wire.co.uk/case-studies/redgrave-pinsent-rowing/): Helping rowers stay in laneNamed after and officially opened in 2006 by the Olympic rowers Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent, this lake was specifically designed for training use. It is situated in South Oxfordshire, between the Reading suburb of Caversham and the village of Sonning Eye. Created by the selective dredging and reclamation of part of the Caversham Lakes, the project was sponsored by a partnership of the Caversham Lakes Trust, Sport England, the Amateur Rowing Association, and the Thames and Kennet Marina.\n\nThe applicationOrmiston was brought in to solve corrosion problems with the existing rowing lane cables, which were installed by the original developers and suppliers. We were approached because of our extensive experience in supplying lane cable assemblies, which includes locations such as Holm Pierpoint, Dorney Lake, Docklands, Strathclyde, Cardiff Bay, Henley Royal and others.\n\nThe Ormiston solutionIt was immediately apparent that the replacement assemblies would have to be stainless steel to prevent any recurrence of corrosion problems. In all, we supplied 250 meter lengths of stainless steel strands with interchangeable stainless steel ferrules every 12.5 meters. The ferrules feature a swaged eye one end and a fork the other. The 1.5 meter buoy lines feature a snood clip one end and a soft eye the other. This enables them to be easily changed or serviced. It also ensures automatic release from the strand in the event of a collision, thus preventing damage to the whole lane.\n\nThe outcomeThe lane assemblies have a projected ten-year lifespan and have been successfully in place now since 2012.\n\n - [British Antarctic Survey](https://www.ormiston-wire.co.uk/case-studies/british-antarctic-survey/): British Antarctic SurveyBritish Antarctic Survey (BAS) is a component of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). Based in Cambridge in the UK, it has undertaken the majority of Britain's scientific research on and around the Antarctic continent for over 60 years.\n\nThe projectIn 2012 BAS advised us they needed strong yet lightweight antennas for use in their operations in Antarctica.\n\nThe Ormiston solutionOrmiston already has significant expertise as a manufacturer and supplier of Kevlar antenna braid. As such, we are a significant supplier to the military for various applications. Recognising that the Antarctic presents particular challenges, we specified, designed and manufactured an antenna that would be lightweight but also robust enough to withstand the conditions. This comprised a cross sectional area (CSA) of tinned copper, over a Kevlar core, with a red PVC coating to provide insulation in extreme low temperatures.\n\nThe outcomeSuccessful testing of a prototype length of the antenna manufactured in our Isleworth factory exceeded anticipated strength and performance tolerances. We were consequently commissioned to complete the order.\n\n - [Old Spitalfields Market](https://www.ormiston-wire.co.uk/case-studies/old-spitalfields-market/): Traders have earned their crusts at East London’s Old Spitalfields Market for over 350 years – it opened back when James II was King of Scotland, England and Ireland and Samuel Pepys wrote the last entry in his iconic diary.It’s now home to range of independent stalls offering everything from food to fashion and art and boasts a bustling environment that’s truly unique. But the history of Spitalfields is also intimately interwoven with silk and this is the crux of an inspirational installation concept Ormiston is proud to have contributed our technical expertise to – a flight of fancy involving 40 illuminated silk moths.\n\nThe projectSpitalfields worked closely with designers Studio 29 on the ambitious concept – an electrified eclipse of chameleonic moths installed above the Trade Market area at Crispin Place, which change colour throughout the day to represent metamorphosis and are suspended at different heights to mimic movement. The artistic aesthetics are impeccable, but since the moths flutter above a busy public space, our paramount priority was health and safety – so we combined our years of technical expertise and comprehensive product catalogue to formulate a fantastic solution.\n\nThe Ormiston solutionThe first challenge which we encountered was the fact that there are no direct vertical anchor points on the ceiling of the building. So to enable these masterpieces to hang safely and securely from above, we suggested that Spitalfields used our high-quality catenary wire to create a heavy-duty wire rope that’s secured and suspended between two firm fixing points. C-clips allowed the suspended moths to be placed anywhere along the span, and they were also connected firmly with Gripple XP1 fixings.\n\nThe outcomeThe art installation was completed successfully, with each magnificent moth now swaying sublimely high above the above the stalls, animated by their designer’s imagination and our technical savvy. Shoppers and stallholders can marvel at their beauty amidst the buzz, bantering and bargaining which has characterised Spitalfields’ commercial and social space for countless generations.\n\n - [Thunderbirds](https://www.ormiston-wire.co.uk/case-studies/thunderbirds/): Capturing children's imaginations in the SixtiesAmong the most popular and iconic of children's television programmes in the 1960's were the various action-adventure puppet series developed by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. These were produced by the British independent company AP Films, which would later become Century 21 Productions. The individual series included Four Feather Falls, Fireball XL5, Stingray, and most notably, Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons.\n\nThe applicationAll of the series featured the Andersons' trademark synchronised 'Supermarionation' technique. At the time, this was a major technical advance in puppetry in that the thin wires controlling the marionettes also carried electronic signals to control head and mouth movements. But the wire had to be thin enough to not be too obviously visible on film.\n\nThe Ormiston solutionOrmiston was approached early on to help solve the technical issues in filming the marionettes. What was required was a very thin yet durable metal wire filament to manipulate the puppets. But the wire had also to be darkened so there would be no reflection, making it as invisible as possible. We developed, manufactured and supplied a 0.125mm diameter wire which was then chemically treated to darken it.\n\nThe outcomeThis innovative wire solution was successfully used throughout the lifespan of each of these series until the Andersons eventually moved into live-action productions at the start of the Seventies.\n\n - [Mini heat exchangers](https://www.ormiston-wire.co.uk/case-studies/mini-heat-exchangers/): Heat transferAt Ormiston, we have unrivalled expertise in the complex field of heat exchange. We have manufactured wire turbulators since 1968 and have developed our own patented looped-spiral design. These are manufactured in our Redditch factory and they have many advantages over Fin or Spiral sheet metal types. The density of the turbulator can be varied to suit the liquid or gas flowing through the tube to give maximum excitement and heat transfer coefficient, with a minimum loss of pressure. This economises on the length, diameter or number of tubes required per unit and allows flow pumps to be kept to a minimum size.\n\nThe applicationWe were approached by a new customer who was seeking to solve a particular heat transfer problem with a piece of machinery.\n\nThe Ormiston solutionDrawing on our considerable expertise in this field, we designed and manufactured a bespoke mini wire-wound turbulator. With a series of loop turns, this had an outside diameter of just 3mm, as compared to the 6 to 16mm of our existing ranges of turbulators.\n\nThe outcomeFollowing successful trials with an initial prototype we received an order to produce and supply a further quantity of these mini turbulators for ongoing trial purposes.\n\n - [Thomas Heatherwick’s ‘Bleigiessen’ Sculpture](https://www.ormiston-wire.co.uk/case-studies/thomas-heatherwicks-bleigiessen-sculptureheatherwick-bleigiessen/): Thomas Heatherwick StudioThomas Heatherwick is one of the most exciting creative practitioners working in the UK today. Established in 1994, the Heatherwick Studio produces stunning and ingenious works that span the disciplines of architecture, furniture, product design, fashion, engineering, sculpture and urban planning.\n\nThe projectThe Wellcome Trust, a biomedical research charity, commissioned the studio to design a sculpture for its new international headquarters in London. The site for the sculpture was within an eight-storey high atrium space above a pool of water.\n\nPhotography: Steve Speller\n\nThe concept'Bleigiessen' - or lead casting - is a New Year's Eve activity in central Europe. Molten lead is poured into water, producing extraordinary shapes from which your fortune can be predicted for the coming year. The vertiginous quality of the atrium space, coupled with the presence of water, suggested the idea of exploring ways of capturing the dynamic shapes of falling liquids. The sculpture consists of 142,000 glass spheres suspended on 27,000 high-tensile steel wires. It glows with a constantly shifting rainbow of colours, an effect created through a unique process of sandwiching reflective 'dichroic' film within the glass.\n\nThe Ormiston solutionIn practical terms, the sculpture consisted of 15 tonnes of glass and just under a million metres of wire, suspended above a pool of water. Ormiston was commissioned to provide a solution that would both support the structure and become part of its essential aesthetic appearance and appeal. Durability was critical in terms of minimising degradation, in particular corrosion. High-tensile stainless steel microcable was supplied from stock and special bespoke ferrules were manufactured to specification. The whole structure was also tensioned on spring cables to prevent movement.\n\nThe outcomeIn 2006 'Bleigiessen' received the prestigious Lovells Art and Work Award. It remains a permanent and iconic feature of The Wellcome Trust atrium and public tours take place on the last Friday of every month at 14.00.\n\n - [Kew Gardens](https://www.ormiston-wire.co.uk/case-studies/kew-gardens/): The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is a much-loved and internationally recognised centre for botanical and mycological knowledge and research, established more than 250 years ago.This national institution has made a vast number of contributions to increasing the understanding of plants and fungi, benefiting the world’s pool of ecological knowledge and giving the UK public the chance to experience plant life from around the world.\n\nThe projectWe were commissioned by Kew Garden to help in the construction of a suspended footpath which would lead to a newly constructed treehouse. The footpath would slowly ascend to reach the cabin – which was itself held in the air by large wooden posts – so safety in the bridge’s construction was of the utmost importance.\n\nThe Ormiston solutionTo ensure that the barriers around the footpath were secure, we supplied Kew Gardens with 1000 meters of 5mm 7x7 316 stainless steel rope. We also supplied the end fittings which, when combined with our rope, helped in the creation of a sturdy and safe barrier.\n\nThe outcomeThe footpath was completed successfully, as was the cabin, which has played host to a variety of events in the grounds of Kew Gardens. In December 2016, the cabin was used as Santa’s Grotto, to the delight of the many children who visit the gardens.\n\n - [Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren](https://www.ormiston-wire.co.uk/case-studies/mercedes-benz-slr-mclaren/): A thoroughbred on the public highwayThe Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Automotive and was sold from 2003 to 2009. It was classified as a grand tourer and was inspired by the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut coupe and race car of 1955.\n\nThe applicationOrmiston was approached to help provide an additional safety element to protect occupants. The requirement was to manufacture a restraint for the engine block so that it would not shift into the driver/passenger compartment in the event of an accident involving a major impact.\n\nPhotography: Cars en travel\n\nThe Ormiston solutionThis was an unusual challenge for us, requiring a special and innovative solution. The client specification called for Zylon lanyards. Zylon is a high-tensile synthetic polymer material which was invented and developed by SRI International in the 1980s. It is currently manufactured by the Toyobo Corporation. Having sourced the material, we prepared a prototype assembly using stainless steel rounded ferrules. These elements were then tested to destruction, easily exceeding the required specification tolerances.\n\nThe outcomeThe special engine restraint assembly proved successful and we continued to supply these components until production of the model ceased in 2009.\n\n - [Heathrow Airport](https://www.ormiston-wire.co.uk/case-studies/heathrow-airport/): Heathrow Airport officially opened to commercial air traffic on 31st May 1946. And according to official statistics, this now-iconic air hub 14 miles west of central London processes 80.1 million passengers annually, serves 203 destinations in 84 countries and shipped 1.7 million metric tonnes of cargo in 2018. But Heathrow isn’t just Britain’s biggest portal to the rest of the world, because it’s also concerned with important social issues. So when our clients Meads Construction asked us for help with an umbrellas installation aimed at increasing awareness of conditions like ADHD, we couldn’t rain on their parade.\n\nThe project ADHD and Autism are commonly used as umbrella terms for a wider range of neuro-developmental disorders including Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dyspraxia – so the concept behind 300 umbrellas seemingly floating from the roof of Heathrow’s T5 is to raise awareness of the unique gifts, talents and contributions of people who suffer from these conditions. A worthy cause indeed, but the project presented a particular technical challenge – how to engineer a level, flat framework which was strong enough to suspend the umbrellas from, while preserving the airport’s pristine public health and safety record.\n\nThe Ormiston solution Mead Construction devised an ingenious plan to construct the required framework with steel cable suspended between the roof parapets, creating bespoke brackets, adding secondary and tertiary cables and then carefully tensioning the structure until the framework was created 10m above ground. The cable was 6mm, 12mm and 1.5 mm galvanised wire rope, while the fittings were galvanised wire rope grips, shackles and Gripple fittings. Within two weeks, we had provided key supplies for a complex yet visionary project which ultimately involved 3.5 km of cable, 3000 fittings and no less than one tonne of steel suspended in mid-air.\n\nThe outcome With only a one week lead-in and two weeks on site, Mead Construction had an extremely tight timescale. But thanks to their amazing discipline and dedication and our technical input, the project was completed on time and the finished display looks absolutely beautiful. Today, Chitra's main focus is sales, purchasing and costing, whether sourcing materials from stock, or manufacturing to meet particular specifications. She works closely with the factory foreman on all stock and production issues and with Karley, the Quality Manager, to ensure overall quality control, particularly where bought-in raw materials are concerned. Chitra says: 'I have raised three children while working at Ormiston. Now I enjoy eating out and trying different types of cuisine. I even enjoy an occasional flutter on the horses!'\n\nKarley OrmistonAssistant Company Secretary\n\nKarley has been with the company for nearly 20 years and is the first point of contact for potential and existing customers, whether by phone or email.
